Rustic Roots has a large selection of reclaimed beams from Southeastern & Midwestern barns, buildings and homesteads. Our reclaimed hand hewn beams were fallen logs that were hewn into shape using a broad ax. The axes were known as an ‘adze’, which is why we call them hand hewn. Before circular saws using an ax was the only way to shape your beams. The character of the rural past comes to life with these beautiful reclaimed hand hewn beams.

Hand hewn beams give a rustic and natural feel to any home or cottage. They look stunning on ceilings and bring a warm, nostalgic feeling to any room. At Rustic Roots we offer hand hewn beams from 4 foot to 40 foot and 4" thick to 14" thick. We have access to beams from around the Country so we can help source beams when you have a particular need. We also have an outstanding selection of circle sawn rough cut beams. If you need a beam package please give us a call or send us an email.

You can also visit our 13,000 square foot warehouse located in Historic Monroe, Ga. Here we keep  a good stock of White Oak, Red Oak, Beech, Maple, Poplar and Hemlock hand hewn beams. We do offer bulk buying discounts.

should i finish MY reclaimed wood beams?

We get asked a lot about finishing or not finishing your reclaimed wood beams. It is really a matter of preference. Finishing the beam may be necessary to integrate the beams into the overall ambiance of the space.

There are many different options when it comes to finishing your reclaimed beams. Adding a finish to reclaimed wood can change the appearance of the beam. We use a few types of different finishes to get the clients desired look.

First, we make sure the wood is clean and sanded to remove any unwanted rough or rotted out areas. We then discuss the finish options with the clients. Our most popular finish is wax. Wax is a great finish on beams. Wax comes in a pallet of various colors like light brown, dark brown, rustic pine, golden oak and ebony.

Wax is applied with a small brush so you can get the product into all the nooks and crannies! In doing so the rich undertones of the beams really come through while putting a light protective sheen on the beam.

Another popular finish is Danish oil. This oil is brushed on the beam and will give it a bit more of a sheen than wax. It looks great however it is only offered in one type of sheen and there are no color options.

Our most popular finish by far is...NO FINISH. Leaving these 100 to 200 year old beams with the original patina on them is our clients favorite option. We typically will hand brush or use a motorized nylon brush to clean off the dirt, cobwebs and such to reveal the true beauty of the beam.

Below are a few pictures of some of the beam finishing options.

    RECLAIMED ROUGH cut BEAMS

Rough sawn beams are another great reclaimed wood option for ceilings and mantels. These beams are defined by their rough cut circle saw marks. These beams were cut with a circle sawmill rather than with an axe. Rough sawn beams are a little more polished looking compared to their rustic hand hewn cousins. They are typically 100 to 130 years old and have mortise and tenon joints like hand hewn beams.

Many of our clients who are building modern farmhouses or more contemporary spaces will add these beams to finish off the space.

  • hand hewn and rough sawn beams
  • are reclaimed beams structural rated?

No. Reclaimed wood beams have held up heavy structural loads for many, many years. Even though they are heavy duty beams we do not grade our beams for structural purposes. The barn wood beams we provide are for decorative use only.  If you do need them for structural use, you will want to hire a third party to grade the beams for you.
